TOOL OVERVIEW

About GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot has evolved from an AI code-completion assistant into a broader agentic development platform. It now spans code editors, GitHub.com and the command line, helping developers write code, understand repositories, review changes and delegate larger tasks. The service is closely integrated with GitHub’s software-development workflow, which makes it especially relevant to teams already using GitHub for issues, pull requests and source control.

Copilot’s feature set includes code completion, chat, agent mode, code review, coding agents and the Copilot CLI. Developers can use AI inside supported IDEs, ask Copilot to reason about a codebase, receive first-pass pull-request reviews or delegate work that can result in code changes and pull requests. The CLI adds an agent directly to the terminal and can work with GitHub issues, branches and pull requests while respecting repository guardrails.

GitHub offers a free individual tier with limited usage, followed by paid plans that increase limits and access to advanced models and agentic capabilities. The platform supports multiple AI models and uses AI credits for many higher-cost interactions. Business and enterprise offerings add organization-level controls and policies for teams that need more centralized governance.

GitHub Copilot is a natural fit for developers who want AI assistance embedded directly in the software lifecycle. Its GitHub integration is a major advantage for collaborative engineering teams, particularly when code review, issues and pull requests are central to the workflow. As with any coding agent, however, developers should treat generated code as a proposed change rather than automatically trusted output. Testing, security review, dependency checks and human architectural judgment remain essential.
