Perplexity
Perplexity is an AI-powered search and research engine built around current web information, source-backed answers and citations, with deeper Research modes, file analysis and access to multiple advanced AI models on paid plans.
How Perplexity scores
Perplexity is one of the best research-first AI products because sourcing is part of the core interaction rather than an afterthought. It is fast, easy to verify and increasingly capable beyond search, but citations still require human checking and its broader productivity toolkit is less central than its research experience.
Pros
- Excellent current-web research experience|Inline citations make sources easy to inspect|Strong Pro Search and deeper Research modes|Access to multiple advanced models on paid plans|Useful free tier for everyday search and research
Cons
- Citations do not guarantee that the synthesis is correct|Advanced model and usage availability changes over time|Less centered on full office or coding workflows than general assistants|Power-user plan and mode choices can become complex

Our review of Perplexity
What Perplexity is
Perplexity is best understood as an AI research and answer engine rather than a traditional chatbot. Its core experience starts with a question, searches the web and returns a synthesized answer with citations and links that make the underlying sources easier to inspect. That research-first design gives Perplexity a clear identity in a market where many general assistants now have web access but do not always make sourcing the center of the experience.
The Standard plan is free, while Pro, Max and enterprise offerings expand search volume, model access and advanced capabilities. Perplexity Pro currently includes extended Pro Search, more file and attachment analysis, deeper Research access, image and limited video generation, and access to a selection of advanced models. The exact models can change over time as providers release new versions, which is both a strength and a reason to avoid judging Perplexity by a single underlying model name.
Search, citations and source transparency
Perplexity’s strongest feature is the way it connects generated answers to sources. Citations do not make an answer automatically correct, but they dramatically improve the user’s ability to check where a claim came from. This is valuable for market research, competitive analysis, current events, product comparisons, travel research and other tasks where up-to-date information matters.
Pro Search goes beyond a quick answer by performing more involved search and reasoning, while Research mode is intended for deeper investigations that require multiple steps and a more substantial report. Perplexity also allows users on eligible plans to choose from advanced models, which can be useful when a particular task benefits from a different reasoning or writing style.
Files, creation and broader productivity
Perplexity is no longer only a search box. Pro supports file and photo uploads for analysis, and Perplexity’s broader feature set includes creating files and apps as well as image and video generation. These capabilities make it possible to move from research toward an output without leaving the product immediately.
Even so, its center of gravity remains research. A user whose main job is long-form drafting, office productivity, coding inside a repository or visual creation may prefer a product optimized for that workflow. Perplexity is most differentiated when the question is, “What does the current evidence say, and where can I verify it?”
Ease of use
Perplexity is very easy to start using because web research feels natural in a conversational interface. The citations are visible rather than hidden behind a separate workflow, and users can open the source material when something matters. The product also provides different search and research modes without requiring users to understand the technical details of every model.
Power users face more complexity once they start choosing among models, plans, research modes and agentic features. That complexity is manageable, but it reinforces the need to select the mode based on the task rather than always choosing the most expensive or powerful option.
Value for money
The free tier is useful for normal research, and paid plans become attractive for people who repeatedly conduct source-heavy work, need more uploads or want access to a broader model selection. Perplexity’s value is easier to justify for researchers, analysts, students, journalists and professionals who would otherwise spend significant time running searches and manually synthesizing sources.
Limitations
The presence of citations can create a false sense of certainty. A citation may support only part of a sentence, a source may itself be weak, or the model may draw a conclusion that the source does not justify. Users still need to open important sources, prefer primary evidence and independently confirm critical facts. Model availability and usage limits also change, so comparisons based on a fixed list of included models age quickly.
Who Perplexity is best for
Perplexity is one of the strongest choices for research-first users who care about current information and visible sourcing. It is particularly useful for rapid exploration, competitive research and fact-finding where the ability to inspect sources is part of the workflow. It is less complete as a universal productivity environment than the broadest assistants, but that focus is also why it earns a strong Indexura rating.
