AI Comparisons

Six affordable AI chatbot options, compared on what they actually cost, how they work on WordPress, and whether a human can step in when needed.

Imagine you’re a dog groomer with a busy WordPress site. You’re constantly fielding the same five questions: Can I walk in? How much is doodle grooming? Are you open on Sundays? Do you offer nail-trim-only visits? Can I book online? And, of course, these always pop up right when you’re in the middle of a trim.

Here’s the quick answer for dog groomers and other small business owners with WordPress sites: tawk.to, with its $29/month AI Assist Growth add-on, is a practical pick if you need a free live-chat inbox and someone to step in when the bot gets stuck. Growth includes 1,000 AI credits—not necessarily 1,000 replies. Chatling’s $25 Starter plan makes sense if you’re focused on capturing leads and can choose an economical AI model. Chatbase ($40) is useful when your answers live in lots of website pages and documents, but its built-in helpdesk features sit on a more expensive plan. Tidio and Crisp suit lighter AI traffic; AI Engine gives technical owners more control.

It’s easy to get tripped up comparing these plans. Tidio counts AI conversations, while tawk.to counts credits used by each reply, with different models using different amounts. Chatling and Chatbase have model-weighted credits too; Crisp includes a small dollar allowance for AI. The same visitor traffic can produce very different bills. We’ll show the assumptions behind the numbers instead of pretending a $29 subscription always costs $29.

Pricing and plan features checked November 3, 2026. This is an independent, research-based comparison, not a hands-on benchmark. No vendor paid to be included. Links to the official websites are informational; sponsored or affiliate links, if added later, will be labeled.

How we evaluated these chatbots

We put this guide together using vendor pricing pages, help documents, and WordPress plugin listings—not by testing all six tools on the same website. We verified the main plan prices and credit rules from official sources where available. A few capabilities still depend on your settings, integrations, or checkout configuration; check those with the vendor before paying.

We weighed seven criteria:

Criterion Weight
WordPress installation and compatibility 20%
AI response quality and knowledge training 20%
Pricing and included usage 20%
Customer support and lead generation 15%
Customization and branding 10%
Integrations and human handoff 10%
Privacy and security features 5%

These weights shaped our judgments, but we haven’t turned them into numeric scores. Without our own testing on identical content, a score like “8.7/10” would imply precision we don’t have. Every claim about AI answer quality below is a description of how the product works, not a measured result.

Our rule is that the entry AI-capable hosted subscription must cost less than $50 on month-to-month billing. The DIY AI Engine plugin is a separate annual-license option, with model API fees on top. Free human live chat is not the same as free AI support, and a qualifying entry plan does not guarantee you can handle hundreds of conversations for under $50.

tawk.to + AI Assist: best for local service businesses

tawk.to’s live chat is free for unlimited agents, and its AI is a paid add-on called AI Assist. The Growth tier costs $29 a month or $290 a year, with 1,000 monthly AI credits, three AI agents, up to 500 crawled website pages, and human takeover. It supports integrations, including WooCommerce, though you should test the product and order actions you actually need.

Installation is straightforward through the official tawk.to WordPress plugin. AI Assist can learn from your knowledge base, uploaded documents, and crawled site pages. It is worth checking the crawl results rather than assuming every WordPress page was read correctly, particularly on sites where important content is loaded by JavaScript.

Here’s where things get tricky. The default Auto model uses three credits for each AI reply. You can manually choose cheaper models, including Claude Haiku 4.5, GPT-4o mini and Gemini Flash, that use one credit per reply. So Growth’s 1,000 credits might cover around 333 Auto replies or 1,000 one-credit replies before other AI features use any credits. Purchased top-ups cost $30 per 1,000 credits. Add-ons are charged per website, so an agency with several client sites needs to budget for each property separately.

  • Free live chat inbox, tickets and a knowledge base underneath the AI
  • Human takeover and WooCommerce integrations on the Growth tier
  • Lightweight, widely used plugin
  • Model-dependent AI credits and per-site billing
  • Extra credits are about $30 per 1,000
  • Published AI response-quality benchmarks for this small-business scenario are limited

Choose it if you run one site and want a person to step in when a customer needs more than an FAQ. Avoid it if you expect long conversations but need an absolute $29 monthly ceiling.

Our assessment: this is the strongest fit for a small site that needs a human-backed inbox, not necessarily the cheapest option at high chat volume. Select the AI model deliberately, monitor credits after a week, and compare Growth with higher tiers if your usage climbs.

Chatling: best for lead generation and freelancers

Chatling is a no-code AI chatbot builder. The Starter plan costs $25 a month, or $21 a month billed annually ($250 a year), and includes 1,750 AI credits, two AI agents, two seats and 10 million characters of knowledge base content with weekly auto-sync.

Credits depend on the model. Chatling’s published credit list has Claude Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna at one credit per AI reply, while Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol use five. On Starter, that is about 1,750 one-credit replies or 350 five-credit replies, assuming no other credit use. You can also buy an extra 1,000 credits for $10 a month. That flexibility is useful, but don’t switch models without checking the cost.

Chatling has no dedicated plugin in its documentation. Its WordPress guide uses the free Insert Headers and Footers plugin to paste the widget code, and it also publishes an Elementor guide. Lead capture runs through the visual builder’s Capture Response blocks, with Google Sheets, Cal.com and Zapier connections. Live chat takeover is included, though routing and AI handoff summaries start on Growth ($75).

  • Model choice lets you trade answer quality for volume
  • Cheap credit top-ups
  • 80+ languages and a 7-day money-back guarantee
  • “Powered by Chatling” branding costs $35 a month to remove, which breaks the $50 budget
  • No native WooCommerce integration
  • Knowledge resyncs are capped by monthly resync credits

Choose it if you want to capture leads or book calls. Avoid it if white-label branding matters on a tight budget.

Our assessment: the best tool here for a business that expects to grow, because both the credit system and the overage price scale gently.

Chatbase: best for content-heavy and multilingual sites

Chatbase is one of the best-known AI chatbot builders. Its Hobby plan costs $40 a month or $32 a month billed yearly, with 700 message credits, one AI agent, two seats and 40 MB of training content. It trains on crawled website pages, PDFs, Word files, text, Q&A pairs and Notion, and its FAQ says it handles 95+ languages with automatic detection.

According to Chatbase’s FAQ, most models cost 1 credit per response, popular models such as Claude 5.5 Sonnet, GPT-6.1 Sol and Gemini 3.8 Flash cost 2, and the top models cost 4 or 5. When credits run out, the bot shows visitors an “unavailable” message. Auto-recharge costs $40 per 1,000 credits.

The Hobby plan has gaps that matter for small businesses. Auto-resync of training data, the Chatbase helpdesk inbox and helpdesk handoff integrations (Zendesk, Freshchat and others) all start on the $150 Basic plan. Hobby does include WordPress, Calendly, WhatsApp and Shopify connections. The WordPress plugin has about 5,000 installs but was last updated in March 2025, and WordPress.org warns it hasn’t been tested with the latest three major releases. Pasting the embed script works as an alternative.

  • Flexible training sources and strong language support
  • SOC 2 and GDPR, with no training on your data
  • Calendly on the entry plan
  • No human handoff or auto-resync below $150
  • Overage at $40 per 1,000 credits is expensive
  • Branding removal costs $99 a month

Choose it if your answers live in long documents or you serve visitors in several languages. Avoid it if you need a person to take over chats.

Our assessment: good AI on a plan that’s too thin for customer support. It’s best as an answer engine with a booking link for follow-up.

Tidio + Lyro: best for very low-volume stores

Tidio’s free plan has limited human chat, while its AI agent Lyro is priced separately. Lyro costs $39 a month for 50 AI conversations, or $32.50 a month on annual billing. Tidio also offers a one-time trial allowance of 50 Lyro conversations. If you need more, 100 AI conversations cost $75 monthly, 500 cost $350, and 1,000 cost $700, according to Tidio’s published pricing guide. That makes its entry plan an option for low AI volume, not an inexpensive way to handle a thousand customer questions.

Lyro counts a conversation once, however many replies it takes, which is fairer than per-reply metering. It trains from FAQ uploads, an FAQ scraper and a website scraper. The official plugin is actively maintained and Tidio has a native WooCommerce integration.

There are two limits worth watching. Tidio counts an AI conversation once when Lyro responds, rather than charging for every reply. But the 50-conversation entry quota is small, and higher quotas move you above our $50 budget. Human-chat quotas and other paid features are separate, so check the total setup you need at checkout.

  • Per-conversation AI billing
  • Best-maintained plugin in this group
  • Native WooCommerce support
  • 50 AI conversations is very little
  • Auto-upgrade can push you past budget
  • Lyro product recommendations need a paid Lyro quota

Choose it if you get a handful of chats a day. Avoid it if traffic is growing.

Our assessment: a well-integrated WordPress and WooCommerce option for light traffic, but the Lyro plan gets expensive as its conversation allowance grows.

Crisp Mini: best for small teams that also handle email

Crisp prices per workspace, not per seat. Mini costs $45 a month for four seats, a shared email inbox and $5 in Hugo AI credits. The vendor estimates this is enough for around 90 automated conversations, but the real number depends on what those conversations consume.

Crisp gets one design decision right. Once included credits run out, Hugo stops answering and escalates conversations to your team, unless you switch on pay-as-you-go with a spending limit. Your visitors never see a dead bot. Hugo can train on your content from Mini, but a published knowledge base, workflow automation and AI chatbot flows require Essentials at $95.

The Crisp plugin has over 20,000 installs but carries the same “not tested with the latest three major releases” warning as Chatbase’s.

  • Safe fallback when AI credits run out
  • Four seats and email in one inbox
  • Free plan for live chat only
  • Roughly 90 AI conversations included
  • Pay-as-you-go rates aren’t on the pricing page
  • Key AI features sit on the $95 plan

Choose it if human support is your main channel and AI is a helper. Avoid it if you want AI to handle most chats.

Our assessment: the most graceful failure mode here, with the smallest AI allowance.

AI Engine: best for hands-on owners who want it all inside WordPress

AI Engine by Meow Apps is a WordPress plugin, not a hosted chatbot subscription. Its free version includes basic chatbot capabilities. AI Engine Pro costs $59 a year for one website, $79 a year for five or $149 for twenty, before the separate cost of your AI provider. You connect your own API key and manage the configuration.

The Pro version supports richer knowledge and integration features, including embeddings and function calling for WordPress or WooCommerce workflows. Depending on the design, you may need an external vector-storage service as well as model API usage. Those are not automatically free, and your costs depend on the provider, model, context size and conversation length. That is why we haven’t treated the annual plugin license as an all-in monthly chatbot price.

  • Lowest possible cost at modest volume
  • Runs inside WordPress with your choice of model
  • Multi-site licenses suit agencies
  • No built-in live chat or helpdesk handoff
  • Setup takes real technical comfort
  • Costs arrive on two or three separate bills

Choose it if you’re comfortable managing API keys. Avoid it if you want a vendor to own uptime and answer quality.

Our assessment: the cheapest serious option, paid for with your time.

Tools that didn’t qualify

SiteGPT has a WordPress plugin, but its Starter plan costs $59 on monthly billing; the $39 monthly equivalent requires an annual commitment. Collect.chat’s traditional bots aren’t a like-for-like AI-answering alternative. We also excluded higher tiers of Tidio, Chatling and Chatbase once their base monthly subscription exceeded $50.

WordPress AI chatbot pricing comparison

Product Qualifying AI plan Monthly billing (USD) Annual-billing equivalent Included AI usage Free plan or trial Overage or add-ons Source
tawk.to AI Assist Growth $29 $24.17 ($290/yr) 1,000 model-weighted credits Free chat; 100 AI messages free $30 / 1,000 credits; optional branding tawk.to add-ons
Chatling Starter $25 $21 ($250/yr) 1,750 model-weighted credits Free plan, 200 credits $10 per 1,000 credits; branding $35 chatling.ai/pricing
Chatbase Hobby $40 $32 700 credits Free plan, 50 credits; 7-day trial $40 per 1,000 credits; branding $99 chatbase.co/pricing
Tidio Free + Lyro 50 $39 $32.50/mo ($390/yr) 50 AI conversations 50 lifetime Lyro conversations $75/100 chats; $350/500; $700/1,000 tidio.com/pricing
Crisp Mini $45 Not verified $5 Hugo credits (~90 conversations) Free plan without AI Pay-as-you-go, rate unpublished crisp.chat/en/pricing
AI Engine Pro Starter Not sold monthly $59/year (~$4.92/mo) + API API-metered; depends on model Free plugin API provider and optional storage fees meowapps.com

That $25 price tag doesn’t tell the whole story. Tidio counts whole AI conversations, so several replies in one conversation still count as one AI conversation. tawk.to and Chatling deduct model-dependent credits for AI replies. Chatbase also uses credits, while Crisp meters a dollar-based AI allowance. The figures below use three AI replies per conversation, monthly billing, no branding-removal add-ons, and full 1,000-credit top-up packs where relevant. tawk.to shows both a one-credit model and the three-credit default Auto model. These are examples, not vendor quotes or a guarantee that a selected plan is the cheapest at that volume.

Monthly AI conversations tawk.to Growth
1-credit / Auto
Chatling Starter Chatbase Hobby Tidio Lyro Crisp Mini
(usage varies)
100 $29 / $29 $25 $40 $75 ~$45+; varies
500 $59 / $149 $25 $80 $350 Usage-dependent
1,000 $89 / $269 $45 $150 (upgrade) $700 Usage-dependent

One extra cost-saving check: tawk.to Business costs $99/month with 5,000 credits. At 500 conversations on the three-credit Auto model, it can be cheaper than paying $149 for Growth plus credit packs. The table deliberately compares Growth in both columns; it does not optimize across every plan.

At the assumptions shown above, Chatling Starter remains one of the least expensive hosted choices on a one-credit model. That is not a universal result: a five-credit model would need 7,500 credits for 500 conversations with three AI replies each. Always compare your actual AI model and the number of replies visitors need.

Best chatbot by business type

Local service business. tawk.to Growth. A plumber or salon needs answers to hours, prices and service areas, plus a way for the owner to jump in from the mobile app. Free live chat plus $29 AI covers both. The trade-off is weak AI reporting.

Small WooCommerce store. Compare tawk.to Growth with Tidio. Both have WooCommerce support, but the AI actions and customer verification need to be tested on your own store. Tidio bills by conversation; tawk.to bills by model-weighted credits. A store with short FAQs and a store with order lookups may land on different winners.

Consultant or freelancer. Chatling Starter. Most visitors want to know whether you’re a fit and how to book. Lead capture blocks and Cal.com integration handle that for $25.

Lead generation website. Chatling, for the same reasons plus Google Sheets and Zapier. Chatbase Hobby is the alternative if you want Calendly and stronger multilingual handling, but you’ll lack a human inbox.

Small agency managing client sites. AI Engine Pro at $79 a year for five sites, if your team is technical. Otherwise Chatling, where extra AI agents cost $3 a month each. Avoid tawk.to here: AI Assist is billed per site.

Business with multilingual customers. Chatbase, which documents 95+ languages with automatic detection. Chatling supports 80+. Test your actual languages in each free plan before paying.

How to install an AI chatbot on WordPress

  1. Choose a compatible chatbot. Check that its AI plan fits your budget at your expected volume, using the table above.
  2. Create an account. Start on the free plan or trial so you can test before you pay.
  3. Add your website content. Point the crawler at your site URL or sitemap, then upload PDFs and FAQs. If your theme renders content with JavaScript, check that the crawler actually captured your pages; tawk.to’s crawler, for one, reads only server-rendered HTML.
  4. Configure the widget. Set colors, greeting, bot name and the instructions for tone and topics it should refuse.
  5. Install it. Use the official plugin where one exists (tawk.to, Tidio, Crisp, Chatbase, AI Engine). Otherwise paste the embed code with a header/footer plugin or your theme’s custom code setting. Chatling documents an Elementor method; we found no vendor documentation confirming Divi compatibility, though script-based widgets generally work with any theme.
  6. Test on desktop and mobile. Ask your 20 most common questions, and check that the widget doesn’t cover your cart button or cookie banner on a phone.
  7. Set escalation and fallback responses. Decide what happens when the bot doesn’t know, when a visitor asks for a person, and when credits run out.
  8. Monitor performance. Read transcripts weekly for the first month, fix wrong answers at the source, and watch your credit use against your plan.

12 questions to ask a chatbot before paying

Before you buy, train each shortlisted chatbot on the same small-business pages and ask the same questions. For a salon, that could be: Are walk-ins allowed? What does a large-dog appointment cost? Are you open Sunday? Can I book tomorrow? What’s the cancellation policy? Do you serve my postcode? Can I pay in person? Where can I park? Can I speak to someone? Can you refund a booking? What is my appointment status? What happens if I enter my card number?

A useful chatbot should answer the documented questions accurately, admit when it does not know, and route account-specific or sensitive requests safely. Record wrong answers, the number of credits consumed, and what happens when a person is needed. That will tell you more about fit than a polished product demo.

Common mistakes small businesses should avoid

Buying live chat and assuming AI is included. The free human-chat inbox and AI agent are separate products or separate quotas at several vendors. Make sure the plan you selected actually answers questions with AI.

Ignoring conversation limits. Tidio’s Lyro allowance can push your subscription into a more expensive tier if you need a higher quota. Chatbase requires more credits or an upgraded plan when you exhaust the allowance. Decide what the bot should do when its budget runs out.

Training the bot on outdated pages. If your old pricing page is still published, the bot will quote it. Chatbase Hobby has no auto-resync, so you must retrain manually after edits.

Skipping human escalation. A chatbot that can’t hand off loses the customer who most needed help. Chatbase Hobby and AI Engine have no built-in handoff.

Forgetting mobile. Most widgets are tested on desktop first. Check the bubble’s position on a small screen.

Collecting sensitive information. Don’t let the bot ask for card numbers or medical details, and review the vendor’s data policy. Chatbase and Chatling both state they don’t train models on your data.

Not pricing extra usage. A few long conversations can use many model-weighted credits. Extra replies, annual commitments, branding removal, and additional sites can turn a low sticker price into a much higher bill.

Can an AI chatbot replace a human support agent?

For a small business, no, but it can cover a large share of the repetitive work. It depends on the type of question.

FAQ automation is where these tools are strongest: hours, prices, policies, service areas. If the answer is written on your site, a well-trained bot will usually find it. Lead capture works well too, since collecting a name, email and need is structured and low-risk.

Order-specific questions need integrations. “Where’s my order?” requires a WooCommerce connection, which only tawk.to, Tidio and AI Engine Pro offer in this group.

General customer support sits in the middle. Bots can answer ordinary questions from your knowledge base, but unexpected follow-ups still need careful handling. Don’t assume an answer is correct just because it sounds confident.

Sensitive complaints, refunds and anything involving an upset customer should go to a person. We can’t give a reliable automation percentage because none of these vendors publishes independently verified resolution rates for small sites.

Final recommendations

Lowest hosted starting price: Chatling Starter at $25/month, provided its model and branding meet your needs. AI Engine can cost less at modest volume for a technically experienced owner, but API usage must be added.

Best human-backed WordPress support setup under $50 to start: tawk.to Growth at $29/month. Its free inbox and human takeover are useful; one-credit models can be economical, while the default Auto model uses credits much faster.

Best for lead generation: Chatling Starter.

Best for a small WooCommerce store: compare tawk.to and Tidio on your expected volume and actual order tasks. We don’t have hands-on evidence for a universal winner.

Best for growing businesses: Chatling, whose $10 credit top-ups and gentle plan ladder scale better than anything else here.

We haven’t named a winner for AI answer quality. That needs side-by-side testing on the same content, which we plan to publish separately.

FAQ

Is there a free AI chatbot for WordPress?

Yes, but free AI quotas are small. Chatling lists 200 free credits, tawk.to AI Assist Hobby offers 100 monthly credits, Chatbase has a limited free offering, and Tidio offers 50 Lyro conversations once. AI Engine has a free plugin, but API usage may still incur charges. Treat free plans as tests unless they meet your actual traffic needs.

Can an AI chatbot learn from my WordPress website automatically?

Most tools can crawl website pages or accept documents as training material. Chatling Starter advertises weekly resyncing, tawk.to has plan-dependent recrawls, and Chatbase Hobby does not include automatic source resync. Test a recently changed page before assuming the bot learned the update.

Will an AI chatbot slow down my WordPress website?

Hosted chatbot widgets usually load vendor JavaScript on your WordPress pages. The performance impact varies by theme, device, script behavior and caching. Measure your site before and after installation rather than assuming a vendor widget has no noticeable cost.

What happens if I exceed my monthly AI usage?

It varies. Chatbase shows visitors an “unavailable” message unless you enable auto-recharge. Crisp’s Hugo hands chats to your team. tawk.to’s AI stops joining new chats until you top up. Tidio may auto-upgrade you to a pricier rung on monthly billing.

Which AI chatbot works best with WooCommerce?

On a budget, tawk.to Growth includes WooCommerce API integrations. Tidio also offers a WooCommerce integration and conversation-based Lyro billing. AI Engine Pro is another option for technical owners who can configure function calls. Test any order-specific workflow with proper customer verification before using it on a live store.

Can customers reach a real person when the bot can’t help?

tawk.to, Tidio and Crisp combine AI with human-chat options. Chatling supports live chat, though the routing and handoff features depend on your selected plan. Chatbase Hobby lacks the full helpdesk experience, while AI Engine generally needs a separate support route. Test what happens when a visitor explicitly asks for a person.
